In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.
This week’s What Inspires interview is with Vlad from the travel blog Eff It, I’m On Holiday.
Vlad is a part time traveller from Romania who balances his full time job as a software developer with his love to travel. When he is not on a sunny beach in Portugal or exploring new cities, you’ll find him dreaming about his next destination or planning a new trip.
On his blog, Eff It, I’m On Holiday, he documents his adventures, shares photography and travel tips, as well as writing about destinations in his own country.
Read on to find out what inspires Vlad from Eff It, I’m On Holiday.
What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
I used to travel a lot with my parents as a kid, but I didn’t know how to appreciate it back then. It was only when I first travelled abroad that I opened my eyes and realized it’s a great big world out there and I would love to see it all. Since then, I became addicted and I don’t feel well unless I know I have an upcoming trip in the future.
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
My first overseas trip was to Paris and I was overwhelmed by everything I saw. I’ve visited all the sights I could only dream of seeing with my own eyes as a child, walked on its charming streets and forgot about everything that was bothering me back home. It took a while, but it was worth the long wait.
What’s one tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
Be open-minded! Whenever I travel, I like to try new things, whether it’s local food, drinks or swimming in the sea at 2 AM. Traveling makes me want to step out of my comfort zone little by little and if it doesn’t work, there’s always chocolate. You can always return to your daily life with interesting stories to share. Oh and also….wear comfortable shoes. Whatever you do, you will be walking a lot!
Best travel experience so far?
Hmm….I’ve been thinking for a few minutes at an answer but I can’t seem to come up with just one travel experience. Each trip has been special in its own way and I can’t pick favourites. It’s all about the people you’re with, the sights you’re seeing and the memories you make.
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
I read a lot of travel blogs – more than I can count. I always discover new destinations that I add on my never ending travel wish list, a list that I like to call my “get there one day” list. I’ve found that reading posts from travel bloggers is better than checking travel guides or Wikipedia since the they are always more honest and it’s more interesting to read about the experiences someone had. I love to plan trips and even if I can’t go to a certain destination, you’ll still find me checking flights, hotels or the best restaurants in town.
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
I know it’s super-cliché, but I’ve always related to the famous quote by Susan Sontag, “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”.
