In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.
This week I have the pleasure of hosting one of my favourite story tellers. Katie is originally from New Zealand but has been living abroad and travelling the world for the past 10 years. In 2012, after nearly 7 years living in London, she and her boyfriend Trav packed their bags and embarked on a 13 month trip through 14 countries in the Americas. Katie is now living in my home town of Sydney and trying to balance work, life and travel. She is planning her next big trip to Alaska and Canada in 2015.
Katie, who I have had the pleasure of meeting in person, is a great story teller. She has had some really interesting, unique and funny travel experiences over the years which she shares on her blog, The World on My Necklace.

What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
My parents were my original inspiration as they travelled a lot when they were younger, especially my Dad who drove a Kombi across Africa, Central Asia and India in the 1970s. My wanderlust grew the older I got with the books I read and movies I watched. Reading about and watching on screen the cultures and landscapes so different to my own inspired me to experience them for myself.
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
My first overseas trip was when I was 10 years old when my family and I went to Australia for a holiday. It was the most exciting thing ever and I looked forward to it for months. We spent 10 days in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and I remember thinking how different things were including the accent. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if I actually went somewhere really different like Asia! I can’t remember what my expectations were for the trip but I had a great time.
What’s one tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
Don’t over plan and pack too much in as you don’t want to burn out. Also, go into it with an open mind.
Best travel experience so far?
Travelling across Canada for nearly 5 months on $37 per day. Couchsurfing, ridesharing, volunteering and hitching meant we met so many locals and had the most amazing experiences that were unique and we wouldn’t have known about had we been staying in hotels and taking buses everywhere. Canadian Thanksgiving with our Help X hosts on Quadra Island, hitching with the Mayor of Grand Manan Island who ended up taking us on an impromptu tour, attending a First Nations Pow Wow and meeting Buddhist Monks on one of our rideshares were just some of the amazing experiences we had in this incredible and underrated country.
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
Reading travel blogs and articles and reading books set in different destinations around the world. Talking to people about travel too. Pretty much everything inspires me to travel!
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
‘Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it’ – Confucius
