In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same. This week’s What Inspires interview is with Hanne from Places People Stories.
Hanne Hellvik, is a twenty something Norwegian girl that has travelled to over 50 countries. Usually sustainable, staying longer time at each place.
Due to her background in sociology she loves to study people and cultures, and thereafter write about it in her blog Places People Stories.
Read on to find out what inspires Hanne from Places People Stories.
What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
When I was young my parents took us a lot on travels in our holidays. I loved it, and it was when I was the most happy. My parent’s also travelled alone sometimes. I also had grandparents and other adults around me that travelled much, and went to incredible destinations. I loved to hear about it when they came home. As I looked up to them, they were the ones that inspired me to travel and discover the world. I wanted to do like them.
Today, I have probably been to more countries than any of them. But they are still my inspiration.
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
Actually, I was only six years old the first time I travelled overseas. It was a family trip down Europe. We visited Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland and Sweden. I was so young that I did not appreciate it as much, as I would today. When I came home my grandma asked me what I liked the most about the trip. My answer was eating at McDonalds in Berlin. McDonalds that we also have in my home town!!!
However, the first time I travelled overseas by myself, was to New York. I lived there for two months, and it was everything I expected it to be – and more. I am very happy I jumped into it, and took the chance.
What’s one tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
Do not be afraid. The world is not as dangerous as many claim. If they claim so, it is usually because they have not travelled that much. Even if you travel alone, you are never alone. There are always someone there to help you out if you get in problems. Most of the places I have travelled to alone, many advised me to not go as it was too dangerous. But nothing ever happened, and I felt safe. Just take your precautions, trust yourself and do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
Best travel experience so far?
My best travel experience must be on my honeymoon to San Blas in Panama. This is my favourite destination. The area exists of over 300 beautiful islands, with crystal clear water and coral reeves. But the place also has a lot of culture due to the Kuna Indians living there. It is also a pretty unknown destination, and therefore still not ruined by tourism, which also makes it great destination to see now.
On that same trip we took a cruise around the Caribbean. It was just so relaxing and wonderful. We got to experience many new places and things. So this whole trip is my favourite travel experience, so far.
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
Between my trips I get inspired by talking to other people that have travelled. Friends, family or other bloggers. I like to hear their stories, and their recommendations. The next trip I am taking is to Central America, and that is inspired by a friend that was there around 2 years ago, and all the great things she has told me about the places she visited there.
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
One of my favourite travel quotes are “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” by Susan Sontag. Though most people think I have visited many countries, I feel I have seen just a small part of the world, and still have many more countries to go to and experience.
