In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.
This week I have the pleasure of hosting Clay from Headed Abroad. Clay is an avid traveler, university student, tea-drinker, writer, and health nut. He is the author of “101 Killer Budget Travel Tips to Save You Thousands,” which he gives away for free on Headed Abroad. He also writes travel content for EliteDaily, ThoughtCatalog, and Lifehack.
What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
I love knowing and I think that’s really where my biggest inspiration for travel comes from. It’s great to read about things, but being able to truly understand cultures and know places is an amazing experience. I need to experience everything for myself.
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
I’m a new traveller so I’ve yet to go overseas. My travel has been around the states and into Canada, although i’m currently preparing to backpack Eastern Europe next May!
What’s one tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
The biggest overall tip that I can give is to not be shy. It’s easy to become intimidated and unsure while you’re on the road, but locals are always willing to help if you need it. Even if they don’t speak your language you can still use hand gestures or a language translator to get what you need to ask across.
Best travel experience so far?
My best travel experience has been exploring the Harry Potter exhibit at Universal Studios. I’m absolutely obsessed with Harry Potter ever since growing up with it, so it really made my childhood all comes together.
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
I enjoy reading a lot of blogs and researching destinations. I research a lot about travelling and it always gives me wanderlust when I stare at pictures.
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
This is a hard one! I have to say my number one favourite quote is “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” – Saint Augustine
