In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.
This week’s What Inspires interview is with Chris from One Weird Globe.
Chris Backe is the blogger behind One Weird Globe, a travel blog that focuses on the weird and offbeat destinations around the world. He lived in Asia from 2008-2015, and is currently traveling through Europe. He’s written about 20 books and itineraries, and recently published a guidebook about offbeat Thailand in April 2015.

What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
Call me self-motivated at heart – I left the States in 2008 to teach English in South Korea… and some of the first expats I met were the sort that go to the same three restaurants or the same two bars… That was lame, so I set out to explore a new place, event, festival, destination – just something different every weekend.
That’s how things started, though my wife has been an inspiration. While we were dating, we’d take the weekend and pick a destination or three to see. It was a great way to bond, and quickly became part of our lifestyle beyond simply ‘something we do on the weekends’…
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
South Korea in 2008. I was going to teach English, though it ended up more like a lot of slow traveling around a small country – a great opportunity to see lots of places tourists miss. Korea was a lot more interesting than expected, partially because I didn’t really know what to expect! There’s something to be said about doing your research – but can only prepare you so much for what’s really going on.
What’s one travel planning tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
Plan, then improvise. Say you have three days in a city – you might sketch out the specific places you’ll go, or the best way to get from point A to B. Once you’re here, however, you’ll likely discover other places to see, or that things have changed. Even with the best research, things can change more rapidly than websites can keep up with. Improvise and get to what matters most to you.
Best travel experience so far?
Wow – so many to choose from… Probably some of the hell temples that are scattered throughout Thailand (though I’ll caution many of the posts here are NSFW)…We recently traveled to Tunisia and visited some of the Star Wars sets in the middle of nowhere. We’re currently traveling our way through mainland Europe, and we’re bound to have some awesome times here as well!
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad
