Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria

May 18, 2020 by Jen Lyons Leave a Comment

The Gippsland Region of Victoria stretches all the way from just east of Melbourne to the New South Wales border and is split into four sections, East, West, South and Central Gippsland.

Because of its size, it is a very diverse region, with landscapes ranging from rugged mountains to rolling plains, rainforests to deserted beaches and alpine regions to ancient forests.

No matter what type of holiday you are looking to have, whether it be a peaceful retreat in the mountains, adventures on land and water or relaxing in the sunshine by the beach, the Gippsland region of Victoria has something for everyone.

My list of things to do in Gippsland Victoria will hopefully leave you dreaming of a holiday in one of Australia’s most precious hidden gems. The list runs in order from west to east (Melbourne to NSW border).

Trails from the town of Tidal River lead to Squeaky Beach, with its white quartz sand. Nearby, Mount Oberon offers views of Bass Strait and offshore islands. While you are there, also check out the lightstation, built in 1859 and The Big Drift, a series of giant sand dunes you can hike over.

This reconstructed gold mining town was once one of the richest towns in Victoria. Today it is known for its Gold Fields Railway and the Long Mine Tour and is a great place for a picnic or a BBQ day trip. While you are there, make sure you check out the town with its olden days style shops and the cemetery where the families of the gold miners are all buried.

The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail is a 63 km recreational trail following the former historic Gippsland Plains railway line route between Traralgon and Stratford in Central Gippsland. The smooth gravel and well maintained trail offers panoramic views of the Great Dividing Range. The fourth longest beach in the world, 90 Mile Beach runs from Port Albert in South Gippsland to Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland. While the Lakes Entrance end is busier, you’ll find other parts of the beach to be virtually people free. The beach is popular with free camping, fishing and camel rides.

Silt Jetties

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

These naturally forming narrow banks of silt stretch for 8kms into the Gippsland Lakes and are located near Eagle Point where they form the mouth of the Mitchel River.  The formation happens over millions of years as the water slows when it enters a lake. You can drive out onto the silt jetties on an unsealed road where you will find lots of people fishing. They are the second longest silt jetties in the world and the longest in the southern hemisphere.

Address: Access via Paynesville Road and Point Dawson Road from Eagle Point to the southern silt jetty.

Cost: Free

Hours: Best seen during the day

Paynesville and Raymond Island

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

Known as the boating capital of Victoria, Paynesville is a great place to get out on the water or enjoy activities around the foreshore. Explore the lakes and canals on foot or cruise or take the Raymond Island Ferry across to the home of a large koala population on Raymond Island. Once on Raymond Island, you can walk or cycle the island’s Koala Trail and spot the resident koala’s which are usually seen sleeping high up in a gum tree.

Address: The Paynesville terminal is located on The Esplanade near Victoria Street.

Cost: Pedestrian or bike: Free | Vehicle: from $13.00

Hours: Ferries run roughly once an hour on the hour from 7.00am to 11.00pm daily

The Gippsland Lakes

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

The Gippsland Lakes cover an area of 345 square kms joining the rivers Avon, Thomson, Latrobe, Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo that fill the lakes, marshes, and lagoons. The lakes are popular for boating, fishing, and camping, with the most popular way to see them as a first time visitor being on a cruise. Cruises leave from the towns of Paynesville, Metung, Loch Sport and Lakes Entrance making them very accessible to all visitors.

Address: Peels Cruises – Post Office Jetty, The Esplanade, Lakes Entrance

Cost: Peels Cruises – email info@peelscruises.com.au for the latest prices and cruises on offer

Hours: Peels Cruises – various departures throughout the day

Metung

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

The charming village of Metung probably one of my favourite parts of the Gippsland region. It is great for scenic walks along the lake,  fantastic local food including a great monthly farmers market and unique coastal themed galleries. As with the most of the region, it is also a popular spot for fishing with the lakes side and wharfs usually lined with people casting out a line.

Buchan Caves

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

Some of the best publicly accessible caves in Victoria can be found at Buchan. At the Buchan Caves you will find two limestone caves that are accessible to the public through a guided tour, the Fairy Cave and the Royal Cave. Both are about 3 and 4 kms and one in particular can get a bit claustrophobic with some tights spots to squeeze through. The reserve around the cave is absolutely stunning, especially in Autumn. Have a picnic or hike one of the trails that lead off from the picnic grounds, just make sure you keep an eye out for wildlife, there is an abundance in the area. You can read more about my day at Buchan Caves here.

Address: 98 Caves Rd, Buchan

Cost: Single Cave Tour – Adult $23.40 | Child $13.80 | Senior $19.50 | Double Cave Tour – Adult $35.10 | Child $20.30| Senior $28.70

Hours: Tours run 2-3 times per cave per day, check the website for exact times.

Mallacoota

Things to Do in Gippsland Victoria - The Trusted Traveller

This sleepy little East Gippsland town in the far east of the state is what I believe to be one of Australia’s best kept secrets. It is a peaceful haven located quite literally in the middle of nowhere which is why it has stayed virtually untouched. If you love fishing, swimming, walking, wildlife and generally being in the great outdoors, then Mallacoota is a place you will want to check out when exploring Australia.

Where to Stay in Gippsland

The Gippsland region is quite spread out and you could quite easily spend a week or more exploring the area. Below are links to some collections of accommodation in all price ranges for some of the central locations around the region.

  • Wilsons Promontory
  • Lakes Entrance
  • Buchan
  • Mallacoota

Or why not book an Airbnb stay. Use this link to get up to $45AUD off.

How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC

October 17, 2017 by Jen Lyons 2 Comments

Ever since Victoria’s original brewery, Spinnakers Brewpub opened in May 1984, the craft beer scene on Vancouver Island has exploded and there are now around 30 breweries and brewpubs you can visit on your travels around the island.

So it was without a doubt when I was planning my visit to the BC capital of Victoria, on Vancouver Island, that I would be visiting a few breweries.

Travelling solo and without a designated driver to take me on a tasting tour, I found the best option was to book a tour. There are a few breweries that are accessible on foot from downtown Victoria, but I really wanted to be able to visit some on the outskirts too.

Enter West Coast Brewery Tours!

Why West Coast Brewery Tours?

I picked West Coast Brewery Tours to show me around Victoria’s finest breweries because according to the internet, they are the best at what they do.

A massive (and almost unheard of!) 96% of people who reviewed their tours on Trip Advisor gave them five stars making them the number one food and drink tour in Victoria. Who can argue with that!

Going into a tour with almost perfect reviews, my expectations were pretty high. But I am happy to confirm that all those people are 100% correct.

I’ve been on lots of beer, wine and food tours over the years but my experience on West Coast Brewery Tours, The Definitive Craft Brewery Tour, was one of the best.

What I Loved

First things first, I loved the beer. I tasted a few of the best brews I’ve ever had on this tour, but more on that later.

Apart from the ample delicious beer samples at each stop, my favourite part of the tour was spending a few hours with a passionate and knowledgeable guide and tour mates who seemed to love beer as much as I do.

Chris, our guide and driver for the tour, has a real passion for craft beer. He has brewed himself and knows the brewing process well. At each stop and in the van between stops, Chris shared with us the brewing process from start to finish.

He told us about the history of craft beer in Victoria and the history of each brewery we visited. He knew the best beers to taste at each place and shared some great tips on other places we could visit in town after the tour. His passion for the craft beer scene in Victoria really shone through.

The small group was great also. There was just me and two others on the tour making it easy to get to know my fellow tour mates. They were a fun couple from Seattle on a long weekend getaway in Victoria. We shared a love a craft beer, swapped travel stories and had some laughs, even after the tour finished.

Finally, I loved the behind the scenes access that we got because we were with West Coast Brewery Tours. As you’ll read below, at two of the three stops, we got to go behind the scenes to see where the magic happens and even got to taste beer fresh from a brewing tank.

Walk into most breweries around the world and you don’t ever make it past the tasting room. But book yourself a tour and you get an all access pass.

The Breweries

West Coast Brewery Tours don’t just visit the same three breweries each tour. They have a list of about 15 breweries in the Victoria area that they rotate.

Here is a run down on the three breweries, one of which happened to also be a distillery, I visited on my tour.

#1 Phillips Brewing & Malting Company

First stop was Phillips, a legend in Victoria. Despite starting his business on a stack of credit cards, Matt Phillips began brewing beer in a windowless apartment over 15 years ago and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Phillips Breweing Tasting Bar - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

The first three beers Matt produced (an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a super hoppy IPA) were rather bold for the time, and that bold and creative style is how Phillips Brewery is still known today.

Everything is brewed on site (they even have their own malting facility these days) and the shop and tasting room is out the front. We stood at the tasting bar with a view through the window of the brewing facility behind us, as Chris poured the samples. He shared with us the inspiring Phillips story and the characteristics of beers we were tasting.

Inside Phillips Brewing Shop - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

We must have had at least 6-8 different samples fresh from the taps including renditions of those three original beers. I must say I enjoyed all but one, the Espresso Stout (I’m not a coffee drinker), with the Hop Circle IPA, Citricity Grapefruit Zest IPA and the Raspberry Wheat Ale being my favourites.

#2 Victoria Caledonia

Feeling happy after so many delicious tastings, we were off to our second stop, Victoria Caledonia. Located out-of-town on the road to the mainland ferry, this distillery started brewing beer to bring in some income while they waited for the spirits to distill.

Victoria Caledonia tasting room - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

You see, it takes 10 plus years for a good spirit to be ready to bottle and sell, but a beer is brewed in just a few weeks. So they created the Twa Dogs Beer label.

Greeted by friendly locals in kilts (this is a Scottish establishment) in the shop and tasting room, we were led straight to the back of house where we sat on the brewing floor overlooking to whole production.

Here we learned all about the history of Victoria Caledonia and as each beer came out for tasting, we chatted about the taste and how it each one was made.

Victoria Caledonia - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

We got to taste a few of their signature beers as well as some seasonal ones. The stand out for me was their seasonal red ale with a nice smoky rich flavour. It is one of, if not the best red ale I’ve ever had.

Then for an added bonus, we got a whisky tasting too. I’m not a whisky drinker so my first sip wasn’t so great, but Chris quickly added a few drops of water to dilute it and I must say it was quite enjoyable.

#3 Swans Brewery

By this point, my tour mates and I were feeling pretty happy. We’d learnt so much and drank even more. But we still had one more stop to make, the last stop of our tour, Swans Brewery.

Tasting beer right from the tank at Swans Brewery - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

Swans is a brewery and pub in downtown Victoria. Funnily enough, it is located just a few steps from the hostel I was staying at so I had visited the pub the night before.

Before going into the pub for our tastings, we went straight to the back of house operations where they brew their beer. The head brewery, also names Chris, was busy working away while Chris (our guide) took us around and showed us the operation while completing our education on the brewing process and telling us about the history of Swans.

Tasting Paddle at Swans Brewery - How to Visit the Best Craft Breweries in Victoria BC - The Trusted Traveller

I mentioned to Chris (our guide) that I’d tried Swans beer the night before and how the Lemongrass Whit Beer was probably one of the best beers I’d ever had. He took us over to the brewing tank for this beer and gave us each a sample of it straight from the tank. It doesn’t get fresher than that!

Inside the pub we took a seat and enjoyed a tasting paddle of four Swans signature beers of which I really enjoyed their Raspberry Blonde Ale.

With the tour coming to an end, we chatted about beer, our lives at home and said goodbye to Chris who was off to show another group Victoria’s craft beer scene. My tour mates and I enjoyed a meal together and another cheeky beer, before saying farewell to an awesome day.

The Details

West Coast Brewery Tours offer a few different tour types like a brewery and distillery tour, a beer and food pairing tour and the one I picked, The Definitive Craft Brewery Tour, which focuses 100% on beer.

Most tours depart from the Clipper Ferry Terminal at 254 Bellevue Street which is just a short walk from the centre of town. Walking tours depart from the The Guild at 1250 Wharf Street.

Water is provided in the van and food can be purchased at some of the stops, but it is recommended to have something to eat before the tour as a decent amount of beer will be consumed.

Tours are CAD $75.00 per person for public tours. Private tours for groups of eight or more can also be arranged.

For a list of tour dates and times and to book, check out the West Coast Brewery Tours website.

Disclaimer: Thank you to Elton and Chris of West Coast Brewery Tours for hosting me. As always, all opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Best Holiday Destinations in Australia

May 22, 2017 by Jen Lyons 2 Comments

Australia is a huge country with a lot of destinations to choose from for your holiday. While in other countries you might choose to do an extended road trip, it’s not so simple in Australia, where it can take days to travel between cities. If you want to land in the right place for the best holiday, read these recommendations for the best destinations where you’ll want to spend the whole holiday.

Sydney

Sydney is the most popular Australian city for travellers, and has become hugely iconic. Sights like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are comparable with London’s Big Ben or New York’s Statue of Liberty.

Sydney Harbour

There are attractions for all the family, like the Taronga Zoo and the Museum of Contemporary Art, and there’s a busy events calendar year-round too (like Vivid Sydney).

Sydney is the classic choice, and is rewarding both on and off the beaten track. You can stay in the CBD or go for a quieter district with your family, as the public transport system here is very good.

Melbourne

Melbourne is another busy city which has something going on at all times of year. If you’re a sports fan, you already know that it is home to both the Australian Open and the Melbourne Cup, not to mention an annual Formula 1 Race.

Federation Square Melbourne

But there’s also more to Melbourne than an events calendar, and the city has plenty of attractions all year long. There’s an aquarium and a zoo in the city itself, nature reserves and Phillip Island within day trip distance, and Yarra Valley wineries ripe for the picking.

Melbourne is a great break for those who just aren’t satisfied with staying in the same city centre for the whole holiday.

Brisbane

This city is a great place for culture, with a bustling art scene. Visit the Brisbane Powerhouse for culture, or look into history at the Museum of Brisbane.

For current happenings, check out the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Cultural Centre. Visitors always love the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, which offers the chance to cuddle a koala. Who could turn that down?

Brisbane may not be the best-known out of this selection of Australian cities, but it definitely has a lot to offer.

Canberra

Though it may be the capital of Australia, Canberra is often overlooked. That’s a shame, because it’s a fascinating place.

It was built for the purpose of becoming a capital city, resulting in a much more spacious and well-thought-out offering than many capitals around the world.

It’s pleasant for a walking or cycling city break, and the public transport system allows you to get around easily. You can visit the seat of power of the Australian government, as well as plenty of other monuments.

For a less hectic city break and a very interesting look into the history of Australia, you can’t do much better than Canberra.

Great Barrier Reef

While the rest of these suggestions may be cities, you can’t overlook one of the greatest attractions that Australia has to offer. The Great Barrier Reef really does live up to its name, covering a huge distance.

It’s home to millions of sea creatures, including the coral and anemones that make up the reef itself. Most people would put it on their bucket list, but if you want to see it, you should think about going as soon as possible.

A large part of the reef has already fallen victim to coral bleaching, meaning that it is no longer the colourful paradise it once was. Scientists speculate that it won’t be long before the reef begins to die off entirely unless something changes.

While the reef may still be saved, you may begin to see restricted access as part of a concerted effort to reduce stress on the underwater structures, so go now before it’s too late.

Each of these destinations could easily lay claim to being the best holiday spot in Australia, so it’s down to you which appeals to you the most. Though a trip taking in more than one may be tricky, there are ways to do it – so think about how long you want to stay in the country for to fit in as much as possible!

Wyndham Resort Torquay: Surf Coast Comfort

May 26, 2016 by Jen Lyons 2 Comments

The famous Surf Coast of Victoria makes an excellent short break or stopping point to begin the spectacular Great Ocean Road. It’s an area perfect for relaxation if you need a break from everyday life, or adventure if you prefer your holidays more action packed.

Regardless of what you’ll be up to, having a great place to stay will help you achieve your holiday goals and ensure your time on the Surf Coast is a memorable one. We recently stayed at the Wyndham Resort Torquay and want to tell you why we think it’s the perfect place to stay in the area.

Why Stay in Torquay?

Pretty Torquay - Wyndham Resort Torquay: Surf Coast Comfort - The Trusted Traveller
Pretty Torquay

Torquay is the gateway to the Surf Coast and is an easy one and a half hour drive from the centre of Melbourne. It is the first town you come to after leaving Geelong and it is absolute ocean front.

The town is most famous for its waves and attracts board riders from all over the world who want to ride its pumping surf. These waves are world class and home to one of the pro Surfing Leagues biggest calendar events of the year, the Rip Curl Pro, held each year at Bells Beach around later March, early April.

But if surfing isn’t your thing, we assure you there is plenty more to keep you busy. There’s amazing coastal walks, beaches that are a little more family friendly with smaller waves, a world class food and wine region nearby, and one of the world’s greatest drives, The Great Ocean Road, is right on its doorstep.

Why Choose the Wyndham Resort Torquay?

Wyndham Resort Torquay - Wyndham Resort Torquay: Surf Coast Comfort - The Trusted Traveller
Wyndham Resort Torquay

A Warm Welcome

First impressions are always important and the folks at the Wyndham Resort Torquay seem to follow this notion too. It started even before we arrived with a courtesy call from one of the customer service staff the day before to confirm our reservation and ask if there was anything we needed in the lead up to our stay.

A lovely welcome to the resort - Wyndham Resort Torquay: Surf Coast Comfort - The Trusted Traveller
A lovely welcome to the resort

Then on arrival we were greeted with a big smile and friendly welcome from the check-in staff at the front desk. Both ladies working the day we arrived said hi as we entered the foyer and the lady who checked us in was lovely, making pleasant small talk, asking us about our journey to get there and giving us a map on which she showed us the best nearby restaurants, facilities and things to do.

The main foyer also has a very inviting feel to it with big windows that make the most of the ocean views and comfortable seating perfect for short waits during busy times.

A Choice of Accommodation Styles

Choice of accommodation styles is very important to us when travelling. You see we don’t fit one style mould. We’re not budget travellers, nor are we luxury travellers, or anything in between. We are everything travellers who choose accommodation that suits the needs of each individual trip or stay.

The Wyndham Resort Torquay offers two styles of accommodation, hotel rooms and apartments, both are very well appointed and of a high standard. This gives you the opportunity to choose which style best suits the needs of your trip.

For example, if you plan to be eating out mostly during your stay then a hotel room would be a good choice for you. But if you’re more interested in self-catering, then we recommend an apartment which gives you the choice to cook some or all of your meals with the included facilities.

They also offer interconnecting rooms which are perfect for families or people travelling together, giving you more space for everyone to enjoy.

Modern Comfort with All the Mod Cons

Sometimes comfort is sacrificed for modern design but at the Wyndham Resort Torquay they seem to have struck the perfect balance.

Starting in the foyer where the furnishings are modern yet relaxed and comfortable. This theme moves to the rooms which are spacious, have a modern feel to them but don’t sacrifice on the comfort with plenty of soft furnishings.

Facilities to Help You Relax

There’s a long list of facilities available to guests that you would expect from a property like this and each one is designed to help you relax and enjoy your stay in Torquay.

First up, they have two dining choices for you. 100 The Esplanade Restaurant & Bar serves modern Australian food made from locally sourced ingredients and panoramic ocean views. Then there is The Pool Bar (open seasonally) which serves drinks (including cocktails) and light meals throughout the day.

And speaking of pools, the Wyndham Resort Torquay has a massive resort style pool in the centre of the building which has lots of seating for you to relax the day away.

And then after all that exercise or adventurous outdoor activities you can come back to the resort and enjoy the facilities of Endota Spa. They offer all sorts of treatments from massages to facials and everything in between.

Location Location Location

Finally we want to tell you about the location. While it’s not right in the heart of town, we think this is a good thing. One it makes it quieter and two it helps you disconnect and relax, enjoying the whole resort experience more. And if you do need to head into town it’s just a few minutes’ drive or an easy 20 minute walk away.

The beach is just steps away - Wyndham Resort Torquay: Surf Coast Comfort - The Trusted Traveller

But just because it’s not right in town doesn’t mean it’s not near anything. Right across the street, just seconds walk, is the beach and access to the coastal walking track.

Really everything you would need for a relaxing coastal break is just right on your doorstep.

The Details

The Wyndham Resort Torquay offers modern luxury hotel rooms and one bedroom apartments designed for comfort and function. Most rooms have balcony’s with either pool, garden or ocean views.
