Things to Do in Nice

July 8, 2018 by Jen Seligmann 11 Comments

The heart of the French Riviera, Nice is everything you’ve heard it is and so much more.

Nice is a mixture of grit and opulence drenched with loads of sunshine. While the beaches and promenade are the places to be and be seen, it’s the winding cobblestone lanes of the old town you’ll want to get lost in and find your own little piece of Nice.

Here is my list of things to do in Nice that will keep you busy for a few days on this world famous coastline.

Promenade des Anglais

Promenade des Anglais - Things to Do in Nice - The Trusted Traveller

From the Promenade des Anglais you can enjoy the sunshine, beautiful views of the sea and the gorgeous Baie des Anges. The Promenade stretches for 7km along the coastline and in the summer is packed with people taking a stroll, riding their bikes or rollerblading.

You can walk the promenade or for something a bit more active, why not hire rollerblades, a bike or even a segway to experience this beautiful part of the city.

Address: The Promenade runs right along the beaches at Nice.

Soak Up the Sun on the Beach

Promenade des Anglais - Things to Do in Nice - The Trusted Traveller

One of the quintessential Nice experiences is to spend at least a few hours on the beach. There are many big, small,  private or secluded beaches in and around Nice but for a short term visitor you can’t go past the stretch of beach right on the edge of the Old Town.

If you can’t handle sitting or laying on the pebbles that make up the beach, then there are private areas where you can pay €10-20 for a comfortable padded sun lounger and umbrella. There is even food and drink service right to your seat!

Address: Various

Cost: Free to sit on the pebbles or hire a sun lounger on a private beach starting from €10.00 per person.

Hours: Private beaches open from 09:00 until sunset.

Wander the Vieux (Old Town)

Nice Vieux (Old Town) - Things to Do in Nice - The Trusted Traveller

Getting lost in the narrow colourful streets of the Vieux is an absolutely must. The streets are lined with unique galleries; sidewalk cafés where locals enjoy their coffee and a chat; and greengrocers selling local produce.

And while you’re wandering the Old Town, make sure you stop by the Cours Saleya Market, the city’s oldest flower and produce market.

Address: Cours Saleya, Vieux

Hours: Market open 06:00 – 17:30 Tuesday to Saturday and to 13:30 Sunday

Musee Matisse

Nice is full of excellent galleries however, if you are to see only one, let is be the Matisse Museum. Henri Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954.

The museum is located in a 17th-century villa on Cimiez Hill with a lot of his life’s work on display. Pieces range from the 1890s to post Second World War.

Address: 164 av des Arènes de Cimiez, Nice

Cost: Adult €10.00 | Under 18 Free

Hours: 10:00 – 18:00 Wednesday to Monday

Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Russian Orthodox Cathedral - Things to Do in Nice - The Trusted Traveller

On of the more unexpected sights to see in Nice is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Built in 1912, this impressive piece of architecture was the first church to be designated a Russian Orthodox cathedral outside of Russia.

Visit to find out more about the history of the church and explore it’s interesting interior and exterior.

Address: Avenue Nicolas II, Nice

Cost: Free

Hours: 10:00 – 17:00 daily

At the very end of the promenade is Castle Hill. Climb the 300 plus steps (or take the lift!) to admire the gorgeous views of Nice, the beaches and the bay.

At the top are the ruins of a Château, a few cafés, a playground and the chance to take some nice walks. It’s a nice place to visit early in the morning to beat the heat and potentially have the view all to yourself.

Day Trip Along the French Riviera Coast

Antibes, one of the towns on the French Riviera - Things to Do in Nice - The Trusted Traveller

Nice is just one of many towns along the French Riviera Coast and if you have a day to spare why not hire a car and take a drive along this stunning stretch of road.

Make stops in at least Antibes, Cannes and St Tropez along the way. Take a dip at the beach, walk the promenades and stop off at lookout points along the way. Or even continue onto Marseille and loop back via the inland route to Nice.

Just half an hour east of Nice is the independent micro-state of Monaco, one of the worlds smallest countries.

Famous for the yearly Grand Prix and home to some of the worlds richest and most famous, Monaco is a great place to spend an evening.

I suggest getting there just before sunset and heading up to the palace to see the colours change over the city and harbour. Then head down to the Monte Carlo Casino.

You can either spend the evening inside the casino or in one of the bars just outside and enjoy the people and car watching with a drink.

Address: Bus number 100 leaves from Ségurane (next to Place Garibaldi) and Place d’Armesevery.

Cost: One-way €1.50 purchased from driver

Hours: 06:00 – 20:00 daily every 15-20 minutes | Suggest a taxi to return to Nice after bus hours.

First Timers One Month Europe Itinerary

April 7, 2018 by Jen Seligmann 88 Comments

Planning your first trip to a new region is exciting but it can be a daunting task, especially one as big and full of interesting and exciting places as Europe. With limited time it can be hard picking which places you should see this time and which ones might be better left for next time.

There are a few factors that I have considered when putting together this first timers one month Europe itinerary.

Firstly, this itinerary is about giving you enough time in each destination to see the main sights but also have some time to just soak it all in.

Secondly I considered logistics and how easy it is to get from one place to another. While Europe has many transport options that all make it simple to get around, when you only have one month you don’t want to be spending a week of that getting from place to place.

Finally, I considered popularity. A lot of people are reluctant to visit the popular places because they can be overcrowded and a touch touristy. Me on the other hand, I like to embrace it because really these places are popular for a reason, they are awesome!

It is nice to get off the beaten path from time to time but I believe that most people visiting Europe for the first time want to experience the places and sights everyone is talking about.

This itinerary is by no means comprehensive, but what it does give you is an overview of what I think you shouldn’t miss on your first visit to Europe. Feel free to use this as a guide, or a starting point and plan from there by adding more stops or removing any places you don’t fancy.

Transport

In Europe I have travelled by bus, plane and train all at different times and for different reasons. For this itinerary and for the easiest and most convenient way to travel, I suggest using the extensive network of trains.

Why Trains?

I’m a big advocate for train travel. And while it isn’t always the cheapest mode of transport, it is usually the most convenient. The train will usually pick you up in the centre of a city and drop you in the centre of the next.

The biggest pluses to train travel for me are how comfortable and scenic it is. Most trains come in 1st and 2nd class with 2nd class being the equivalent of 1st class in most other parts of the world. Big picture windows and on some trains, almost entirely glass compartments, help you take in the view while you’re relaxing in your comfortable air-conditioned seat.

High speed trains also make train travel in Europe the quickest way to get around on a lot of the routes. Some trains travel at over 300km/hr!

Tickets

For the itinerary below getting a rail plus is the most cost-effective and simplest way to go in terms of tickets. In most cases the pass is all you will need to board any train (except overnight sleepers and high-speed trains) at any time of day giving you the flexibility to move onto your next destination when the time suits you most.

Cost

Youth - 2nd Class
12-25 years
Adult - 1st Class
26 + years
Adult Saver - 1st Class
26 + years travelling in
a group of 2 or more
10 Days in 2 Months$694.00$1,107.00$943.00
15 Days in 2 Months$907.00$1,450.00$1,233.00

Prices in the above table are per person in Australian Dollars and correct at time of publishing. Children travelling with 2 or more adults travel free.

10 or 15 days in 2 months basically means that you have 10 or 15 travel days over a 2 month period. A travel day is a 24 hour period. Say you jump on a train at 9:00am one day, your travel day will end at 9:00am the next day.  On each of those travel days you’re allowed unlimited connections.

With the itinerary below, a 10 days in 2 months pass covers all 10 travel days outlined below. If you are adding any more days, then the 15 days in 2 months pass will be required. If you are cutting some stops out, you may need to look into whether point to point tickets may be a cheaper option.

One thing to be aware of is that an extra seat reservation and fee is required on sleeper and high-speed trains. The agency where you buy your pass (more on that below) will be able to sort out those reservations for you.

Where to Buy

European rail passes are not available to buy in Europe, so it is necessary that you are organised and buy them before you leave home.

Visit the Rail Europe website in your country using the links below to purchase tickets and rail passes.

7 Places to Visit in France That Aren’t Paris

January 18, 2016 by Jen Seligmann 2 Comments

Paris is one of the most visited places in the world and rightly so. It has everything a great city should, scrumptious food, iconic landmarks, world class museums, breathtaking architecture and stunning city views just to name a few.

It’s one of the main reasons why France gets more than 85 million visitors each year. But during our visit to France a few years back we discovered so many other places that together can rival Paris for beauty, culture and atmosphere.

We encourage you to get out of Paris and enjoy a few or all of these seven places to visit in France as they have just as much to offer visitors as Paris.

Normandy

The beach at Arromanches in Normandy

North west of Paris is the region of Normandy, famous for the World War II D-day landings. History lovers will enjoy immersing themselves in war time history at the 360 gallery in Arromanches and getting down to the beach to see what remains of the  wharfs built by the allies to bring the tanks, troops and supplies ashore.  Explore the pretty towns of Bayeaux, Rouen and Caen and find a little bistro to enjoy dishes containing French cheeses and fresh seafood.

Loire Valley

Basing yourself in the city of Bordeaux is a good choice and worth a visit even if you’re not a wine lover. The city’s grand architecture is very impressive with squares surrounded by beautiful 18th century architecture and fountains adjourned with statues. The fortified town of Carcassonne

This fortified town sits atop a hill looking down over the city’s new town. The town dates back to Neolithic times and was occupied by Romans in around 100 BC. These days it is mostly for the tourists and while it is a tad on the touristy side, it is a very cool place. Take a walk on top of the city walks, wander the medieval streets lined with artisan stores, have a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants selling the local specialty, casoulette and check out the palace with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.
