In this interview series called What Inspires….. I aim to share with you what inspires other travellers to get out there and see the world in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.
This months inspiring traveller is actually two travellers, brought together from two different countries by their love of travel. Leading the pack for part-time travellers all over the world, their all about living a balanced life between full time work and part-time travel.
I first came across Heather and Chris from A Brit & A Southerner about six months back and was instantly attracted to their stories of part time travel. As a part time traveller myself I was, and still am, envious of how well they balance their lives. Reading their blog, it honestly seems to me like they are off somewhere new every second weekend. It really makes me want to get out there an explore places closer to my home more often.
What I also love about Heather & Chris is how they have really brought the part-time travelling community together on their Facebook group called Part-Time Travelers. Open to travellers and bloggers with the only pre-requisite to join being that your a part-time traveller. I’ve gotten so much inspiration from my fellow travellers through this group over the last few months and I have Heather & Chris to thank for bringing us all together.
So, let’s get on with the interview shall we. I hope you enjoy reading this and make sure you head over to A Brit & A Southerner to check out their travels.
What or who inspired you to travel and discover the world?
I think it’s safe to say that we have inspired each other to travel the world! We both had a passion to travel before we married, but soon after we really picked up a strong desire to explore and learn more about what the world has to offer. From a personal perspective (Heather), Chris inspires me daily, as he is usually the one to organize and plan most of our trips. The trips we take are the best times in my life because I am able to share the world and my life with my best friend.
Where was your first overseas trip and was it everything you expected it to be?
England was our first trip overseas together! Not only was it a first for Heather in terms of flying, it was also her first trip to meet the parents. We traveled around England for a month hitting some of the major landmarks and some of the not so famous spots.
I don’t think either of us really had any expectations, so the reality is that it far exceeded anything we could have ever imagined.
What’s one tip you can give to anyone about to head off on their first overseas adventure?
Prepare yourself for the unexpected, and have the time of your life. Try everything and don’t hold back because you never know if you will venture back to that spot again!
Best travel experience so far?
We were never able to take a honeymoon after we were married, so we decided that we would wait and take a trip that would not be the normal “honeymoon”. Almost 2 years after marrying, we booked a Christmas and New Years trip to Australia which was truly amazing and well worth the wait!
We spent the majority of our time in Brisbane but also experienced the Gold Coast and Sydney. We encountered so many cool experiences ranging from Cuddling a Koala to exploring the Sydney Opera House. We would both agree that up to this date, this was our favorite travel experience though there are so many others to choose from!
What’s your biggest source of travel inspiration between trips?
Internet without a doubt! We are consistently keeping up with other travel bloggers and reading comments from our followers, which is always encouraging and keeps us motivated to share our experiences with the rest of the world.
Do you have a favourite quote, travel related or otherwise?
“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us”.
Connect with Heather & Chris
We are Chris and Heather Boothman from A Brit & A Southerner. Chris is originally from England and Heather is from Arkansas, USA. We currently call ‘home’ Jonesboro, AR where we both have full-time jobs at Arkansas State University. Chris is the Assistant Director of Records and Heather is the Apple Campus Store Manager. We started our blog in 2012 because we wanted to inspire others who have an interest in traveling but with full-time jobs find it difficult to explore the world. However, we really became passionate about our website last year and are really trying to focus on our niche of weekend travel!
Thanks Heather & Chris for sharing your inspiring travel story with us. For a further dose of inspiration, you can look back over all past interviews here.
