Just like on the drive from Franz Josef to Queenstown, we were blown away by Queenstown not long after we arrived.
The city is perched on a hill that leads to the edge of Lake Wakatipu and looks out over one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the world, the aptly named Remarkables.
Queenstown has been named the adventure capital of the world, boasting dozens of adrenaline pumping activities like bungee jumping and jet boating just to name a few. But for those looking for a more peaceful and relaxing visit there is plenty of other activities to choose from such as boat rides on the lake and taking in the views from the Skyline Gondola.
Littered all over town are dozens of awesome drinking and dining choices some taking full advantage of the city’s position on the water. From backpacker bars with cheap drink deals to 5 star dining experiences, there is truly something to suit every budget and taste in Queenstown. And what I loved most about Queenstown’s dining scene is that it literally puts New Zealand on a plate with a lot of the restaurants using only locally sourced ingredients.
It’s also a great place to base yourself for nearby exploration to places like Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wanaka, the Otago Wine Region and a little further afield, Milford Sound. All can be visited on an easy half or full day trip whether it be guided or independent.
I hope this Queenstown photo gallery inspires you to want to visit as it truly is a MUST-SEE when exploring the South Island of New Zealand.
