Two Week NSW South Coast Road Trip Itinerary

April 6, 2020 by Jen Lyons Leave a Comment

For those who live in Sydney, a road trip down the NSW South Coast is pretty much a rite of passage. I have many fond memories from my childhood, and during my adult life, of holidays visiting parts of this stunning and often underrated part of Australia.

The NSW South Coast is generally quieter than travelling north from Sydney. The beaches more untouched, the towns more quaint and the local produce in abundance. It ticks all the boxes for all kinds of trips, from family holidays, couple road trips and friend group getaways.

With lots to see and do, where do you stay with planning your NSW South Coast road trip itinerary.

First, you need to work out how long you want to go for. From there you can determine how many places you’ll be able to fit into your time. However if you want to see all the best bits in one trip, my suggestion would be to allow at least two weeks.

If you don’t have quite as much time to spend then you can use this itinerary and pick parts out of the trip to explore at different times.

Hiring a Vehicle

First thing you will need is a vehicle. If you live in Sydney or nearby, you’ll likely have your own car. If you will be flying into Sydney you’ll need to hire a car, campervan or caravan.

There is plenty of different types of accommodation available on the NSW South Coast to accommodate those travelling both by car and by campervan or caravan. Holiday parks with space for campervans, caravans and campers are in abundance in most towns along the coast.

A car will give you more freedom to park on the side of the road to discover something new. While campervan’s and caravans are your home on wheels. There are pros and cons to both options.

Which ever option you choose, Expedia has great car, campervan and caravan hire options with comparative prices.

Day 1 to 2 – Sydney to Kiama

Set off from Sydney in the early morning to allow plenty of time for stops along the way to Kiama, the first destination on this two week NSW South Coast road trip.

Things to See Between Sydney and Kiama

Leaving Sydney you have many options for places to stop and explore along the way. In order below is a list of some of my favourites:

  • The Royal National Park – One of the oldest National Parks in the world, there is heaps to explore here and you could quite easily spend a week just seeing everything in the park. For this trip I’d suggest driving through the park rather than taking the highway south. Maybe make a stop at the Audley Boatshed for a coffee or short walk at Wattamolla.

  • The Grand Pacific Drive – This is a beautiful stretch of coastal road with stunning beaches and breathtaking bridges that allow you to drove over the ocean away from the sheer cliffs above. You can read more about some of my favourite spots on the Grand Pacific Drive here.

  • Wollongong – The 10th biggest city in Australia, don’t let this put you off as most of the city is facing the coast and has a really relaxed vibe. Wollongong is a great place to stop halfway through your drive to Kiama to have a dip in the ocean and grab a bite to each for lunch. There are lots of great cafes, restaurants and take-away stores along the beaches.

What to See & Do in Kiama

The sleepy town of Kiama is the perfect place the stay the night. This lively town is full of restaurants, cafes and boutique shopping as well as some must see attractions around the area.

  • The Blowhole – This natural phenomena is basically a hole in the volcanic rock that stoats water metres into the air when the sea rushes underneath. It is said to be at its best when the seas run from the south east but having been there dozens of times myself, I haven’t left disappointed regardless of the sea direction.

Kiama Blowhole - The Trusted Traveller

  • Kiama Seaside Markets – Kiama hosts two monthly markets, on the third Sunday of the month for handmade goods and the other on the fourth Saturday of the month selling local produce.
  • Terrace and Sandstone Walk shops – This small collection of shops are housed in restored timber houses circa 1886 which are the last of their kind. They were originally built by the local miners and today house boutique shops, restaurants and cafes.

The Terrace and Sandstone Walk Shops in Kiama - The Trusted Traveller

  • Kiama Coast Walk – This 20 km walk along a sign posted coastal track takes you from Minnamurra Village through Kiama and finishes at Werri Beach in Gerringong, south of Kiama. You can do the walk in sections or complete it in a whole day.
  • The Beaches – Kiama has some fantastic beaches for all occasions. Looking to spend the day relaxing and swimming, head to Surf Beach which is patrolled; wanting to escape and have a beach all to yourself, check out Jones Beach which is also a great spot to see the Cathedral Rocks; endless stretches of sand can be found at Seven Mile Beach just south of Kiama in Gerroa; or my personal favourite Werri Beach where you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the locals surfers in action.

Jones Beach, Kiama Downs - The Trusted Traveller

  • Jamberoo – Famous for the water park of the same name, there is more to Jamberoo than waterslide. A nice short countryside drive inland from Kiama, Jamberoo has weekend markets, quaint stores and a small array of excellent cafes.

Day 3 to 5 – Kiama to Jervis Bay

Kiama to Jervis Bay Map - NSW South Coast Road Trip Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

The drive from Kiama to Jervis Bay isn’t far, taking less than an hour. You can have a late start and make a few stops along the way. There are two routes you can take, first along the highway or take the detour through the coastal towns of Gerringong, Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads.

  • Berry – One of the top quaint towns in NSW, in Berry you will find plenty of great places to eat, lovely little local shops selling locally made items and some top pubs. If you are there for breakfast or morning tea, check out the Milkwood Bakery or for lunch the meals at the Great Southern Hotel are always great. Just a few minutes drive from the main street is the Berry Treat Factory, a great place to stock up on treats for the long road trip ahead.

  • Shoalhaven Heads – The quintessential sleepy seaside town. A nice place for a stroll to stretch the legs after being in the car. The Shoalhaven River meets the sea here so you get the best of both worlds, nice river and ocean views.

What to See & Do in Jervis Bay

Jervis Bay is a year round destination fringed with stunning beaches, pristine national and marine park and quaint little towns with an abundance of delicious places to eat and drink. The whole area has a very chilled out vibe with lots to see and do for all ages.

  • Booderee National Park – Home to some the the areas most stunning beaches like Caves Beach and Murray’s Beach where you might run into a few of the local kangaroos who like to hang out in the car park. This National Park also has some great short walks, ruins and lovely Botanical Gardens. You could easily spend a day or more just exploring this park.

Murrays Beach, Jervis Bay, Australia

  • White Sands Walk – Beginning at Greenfield Beach picnic area this walk takes you on a loop past some of the best white sand beaches on the bay including world famous Hyam’s Beach, said to have the whitest sand int he world. The whole loop takes about an hour and is relatively flat, so good for most fitness levels.

  • See Whales and Dolphins – During whale season (roughly June to November), these majestic creatures like to make their way into the bay and sometimes put on a bit of a show. However, if you’re not in the area during whale season then you can still see the amazing dolphins that live in the bay. The best way to see these creatures is on a cruise, check out some option in the box below.

  • Point Perpendicular Lighthouse – On the northern end of Jervis Bay, this lighthouse offers spectacular views looking out over the bay and through the opening out to sea. You can even make out the white sands of the beaches that rim the bay.

  • Nearby St Georges Basin – Just 10 minutes from Huskisson (the main town in Jervis Bay) is St Georges Basin, a shallow lake home to some of the regions most beautiful flora and fauna. From Erowal Bay and the few towns along the Basin you’ll be able to go fishing, see flocks of birds take off and land on the still water and watch kangaroos lazing by the shore just before sunset. Its one of the most peaceful places on earth.

Day 6 to 8 – Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay

Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay Map - NSW South Coast Road Trip Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Heading further south in the morning from Jervis Bay, the drive to Batemans Bay is about two hours with lots of beach stops and detours along the way.

  • Lake Conjola – On the lake of the same name, this sleepy little town is a short detour from the highway and a great place to grab a coffee and stretch your legs with a walk along the lake front.
  • Milton – A little further south on the highway is the historic town of Milton which is packed with art galleries, antiques and, surprisingly for the location, fine dining restaurants. Grab a treat from the Heritage Bakery at the very least.
  • Mollymook – Popular holiday spot for families in summer, I love the beach here which is patrolled during summer and great for a swim or surf. The town also has some great beach cafes and fish and chip shops, so this could be a good place to grab a late breakfast or lunch.

Mollymook Beach - The Trusted Traveller

  • Pretty Beach in the Murramarang National Park – Taking the Bawley Point turn off from the highway, this slightly longer detour is worth it for the stunning and secluded beach you’ll find at the end, Pretty Beach. From Pretty Beach there are lots of walks you can do, keeping your eye out for kangaroos in the grass. Also a great spot for a picnic.

What to See & Do in Batemans Bay

Arriving in Batemans Bay will be the start of your adventures in the Eurobodalla region of the NSW South Coast. Famous for amazing beaches and waterways perfect of outdoor activities and food, incredible local sourced food. The countryside through the whole region is rolling hills with grazing cows on the right as you head south and aqua blue ocean on the left.

  • Oysters! – The Clyde River which runs right through Batemas Bay is home to plenty of oyster leases meaning an abundance of local oysters for you to eat. My favourite spot to grab and oyster is The Oyster Shed on Wray St where you will get the freshest oysters served either on the deck over looking the river or for takeaway.

  • Mogo – 10 minutes south of Batemans Bay is the tiny town of Mogo. The street is lined with quaint antique and crafty stores as well as a few great places to grab a bite to eat, maybe even a locally made cake. While in Mogo, check out the zoo there which has a great reputation for the protection of endangered species, you can even feed a giraffe!

Mogo - NSW South Coast Road Trip Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Hit the Beach – There are lots of beaches around Batemans Bay. My favourite would have to be McKenzies Beach in Malua Bay, just south of town on the coastal tourist drive. Its less crowded and has beautiful semi enclosed surrounding cliffs.

McKenzies Beach, Malua Bay - The Trusted Traveller

  • Mossy Point – On the coastal tourist drive south of Batemans Bay is this lovely little coastal township where the Tomago River meets the sea. Down by the river mouth you can hire a kayak and paddle up the river spotting sting rays as they glide under the kayak. It is pristine beauty.

Kayaking at Mossy Point - The Trusted Traveller

  • Durras Discovery Trail – Just north of Batemans Bay off the highway is the southern part of the Murramarang National Park where you will find this 1.5km loop walk through the rainforest. It is a great escape from the beaches in summer with temperatures generally lower in the rainforest.

Batemans Bay to Narooma Map - NSW South Coast Road Trip Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Around an hours drive from Batemans Bay to Narooma with more stunning countryside and coastal towns to explore along the way. You could easily have a late start today, however make sure you allow enough time to check out some of these spots along the way.

  • Moruya Heads – A sleepy coastal town with great Tuesday local farmers markets and beautiful views where the Moruya River meets the sea.

Sage Farmers Market - The Trusted Traveller

  • Coila Prawns – If you love prawns, a stop at the service station on the highway here will allow you to buy some of the freshest prawns you can get. These are not just any prawns though, they are Coila Lake prawns which are small, sweet and delicious, with the prawns completing their entire lifestyle in enclosed waters, which is rare.
  • Tuross Head – Another lovely sleepy town along the coast and probably one of my favourites. There’s a great short tourist drive you can do around Tuross Head if you don’t have much time here. It takes in all the best spots around town including some lovely lookout spots.

Tuross Beach, Tuross Head - The Trusted Traveller

  • Bodalla Dairy Shed – Cheese and dairy lovers will be in heaven in this place. Here you can taste and buy locallly made dairy products include the Bodalla Cheese Company. I especially like their saltbush cheese for something different and don’t forget to grab a deliciously fresh milkshake for the road.

  • Dalmeny Drive Detour – Not long before arriving in Narooma, you can turn off the highway and continue the rest of the way along the coastal Dalmeny Road for beautiful beaches and coastal views. There is also a coastal walking path which you can walk part of to stretch your legs after the drive.

What to See & Do in Narooma

Narooma is gateway to some of the best beaches, snorkeling and wildlife on the NSW South Coast. Set on the Wagonga Inlet, it is a popular place for family holidays, fishing and lazy days at the beach.

  • Hit the Beach – Surf Beach right in the heart of Narooma and is the most popular beach in the area and rightly so. The water is crystal clear, the sand pristine and it is patrolled all throughout summer making it great for swimmers and surfers. It is also home to the Glasshouse Rock formations, great for exploring at low tide.

Surf Beach at Narooma - The Trusted Traveller

  • Montague Island – Located just 9 km off the coast of Narooma is this nature lover’s paradise. It is home to a famous lighthouse as well as many animal species such as the little penguins, seals and sea birds. You can visit the island on a guided tour at various times throughout the year.

  • Mill Bay Boardwalk – A short 350m boardwalk around Mill Bay is the perfect way to start the day off when visiting Narooma. Locals and visitors a like take this walk to see stingrays feeding and take in the beautiful surrounds.
  • Mystery Bay to 1080 Beach Walk – This moderate 5 km return walk through the bush also has the option of a beach walk return when tides are right. The walk is located just a 10 minute drive south of Narooma.
  • Gulaga Walk, Mt Dromadery – A little further south of Narooma, this walk is a lot tougher than those mentioned above and is good for those who have good physical fitness and are looking for a challenge. It is 14km return taking around five hours to complete with the majority of the walk heading straight up to the top of this extinct volcano.

10 Day France Itinerary: See the Best of France

January 20, 2020 by Jen Lyons Leave a Comment

France is a country that offers visitors incredible diversity. It is loved by so many and is one of the most visited countries in the world. But the majority of those people only visit Paris. This 10 day France itinerary aims to get you outside of Paris and exploring other equally incredible parts of the country.

My France 10 day itinerary covers just some of the highlights that France has to offer. It brings together the best bits of France so you can get a taste for this beautiful country and make the most of your precious vacation time.

Day 1 to 3 – Paris

France Travel Guide - The Trusted Traveller

Day 1 – arrival in Paris. This itinerary assumes that you arrive in the morning giving you three quarters of a day to start seeing the sights.

The City of Lights, Paris, is one of the most visited cities in the world and rightly so. It is dripping with amazing architecture, world class art and culture and mouth-watering food. Paris is a city for everyone and its highlights can easily be explored in just a few days.

What to See & Do in Paris

  • Eiffel Tower – The icon of Paris is the perfect place to start your visit. Admire the architecture of what was once the world’s tallest tower before being whisked to the top in an elevator to enjoy the most spectacular uninterrupted views of the city.
  • Arc Du Triomphe – Take a walk up the famous Champ Elysees to enjoy the approaching view of this imposing arch. Built to honour those who fought and died for France, check out the inner and outer surfaces of the Arc for the names of French war victories and generals inscribed in the stone. You can climb the steps to the top for nice views over Paris and down the avenues that run off the centre of the Arc.

Arc du Triomphe - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Notre Dame Cathedral – One of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world, Notre Dame is famous for its incredible stained glass windows and for the gargoyles that guard the cathedral from above. Inside it is simply breathtaking and the view from the top allows you to get a closer look at those gargoyles, the cathedral’s roof and spires and over the city.
  • The Louvre – Home of the famous Mona Lisa, the world’s largest and most visited museum is spread across three wings with eight different departments and around 35,000 works of art and artifacts on display. One visit is most certainly not enough to take it all in so a little forward planning about what you want to see is a must.
  • Montmartre & Sacre Coeur – For many hundreds of years the area of Montmartre has attracted artists from around the world. Today the area has a very bohemian vibe with tons of character and notorious nightlife. The most notable structure in the area is the lovely Sacre Coeur Basilica which holds services daily for locals and visitors. Make sure you enjoy the view from the area in front of the Basilica looking out over Paris.

Sacre Coeur - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Cruise the Seine – Some of Paris’s best architecture and landmarks line the Seine River making a sightseeing cruise a must do. My top tip is to hop aboard the Bateaux Mouches for a one hour cruise at night on an open top boat that will take you under all of the city’s famous bridges and past its famous sites.
  • Palace of Versailles – This grand chateau was once home to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and is simply spectacular inside and out. Grand rooms filled with priceless works of art, furniture and antiquities on the inside and sprawling perfectly manicured gardens on the outside make this a worthy half to full day trip from the centre of Paris.
  • Enjoy the Gardens – Paris has some really stunning gardens that are a haven from the busy streets of the city. Stroll the length of the Jardin des Tuileries from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde or enjoy the spectacular flower displays of the Jardin du Luxembourg, just to name two of the city’s best green spaces.

The Palace of Versailles - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Louvre Museum – pre-book and skip the queues!

Illuminations Cruise – see the city of lights at its best.

Arc De Triomphe – don’t waste time in line.

30 Things to Do in Paris

Day 4 to 5 – Loire Valley

Chateau Chambord - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Drive: Paris to Tours – approx. 2.5 hours. Leave Paris early to make the most of the day in The Loire Valley.

Famous for its abundance of chateau, The Loire Valley has to be one of the most beautiful regions of France. Explore the chateau, wander the sprawling gardens and orchids, taste the local produce and wine and just simply soak up the beauty of the landscape.

What to See & Do in the Loire Valley

  • Chateau Chambord – The biggest and most famous of the chateau in The Loire Valley, Chateau Chambord was built by King Francis I as a hunting lodge. Of course it has been upgraded and expanded considerably since then. It is one of the best examples of renaissance architecture in the world. A small number of the 440 odd rooms in the chateau are open to the public to explore.
  • Ainy-le-Vieil Chateau & Gardens – One of the many chateau in the region, what sets Ainy-le-Vieil apart from the rest is the incredible gardens which are split into a series of rooms each with a different theme. The chateau itself has been in the same family since 1467 and you can explore the interiors to check out some of the personal mementos left behind by past family members.

Rouen - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Cycle along the Loire River – The Loire Valley is relatively flat making it the perfect place to hire a bike and take a ride. There are bike hire places in most villages along the river and the path is well sign posted. Whether its just a short ride or a full day, you’ll see plenty of beautiful chateau and have the opportunity to stop by plenty of quaint little villages on your ride.
  • Bourges Cathedral – One of the most remarkable Gothic cathedrals in France, the Bourges is located in the town of the same name and dates back to the 12th century. Modelled on Notre-Dame in Paris, the cathedrals biggest draw card is its spectacular stained glass windows intricately depicting biblical stories.

Day 6 to 7 – Lyon

Lyon's beautiful and iconic architecture - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Drive: Tours to Lyon – approx. 4.5 hours. Leave Tours early to make the most of the day and allow time for plenty of scenic stops along the way.

If the main reasons you’re visiting France are for the culture and the food then you’ll love Lyon. France’s third largest city is home to interesting museums, cultural events year round and food offerings for those with an adventurous palate.

What to See & Do in Lyon

  • Explore the Vieux – Lyon’s Vieux (old town) is a great place to start your visit. Take a wander around the cobblestone streets through narrow passageways past delicatessens, artisan stores and sidewalk cafes. Keep your eye out for an old traboule which are passageways used in medieval times by the silk industry, some of which have been recently renovated.
  • Dine in a bouchon – These small restaurants serve the most traditional of Lyonnaise cuisine and are best suited to those looking to try something a little different. Dishes on the menu might include ingredients such as tripe, bone marrow or pork offal.

By the river in Lyon - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere – Perched high above the old town, this impressive white church dominates Lyon’s skyline and offers great views over Lyon from the promenade out the front. You can walk up the steep steps to get there or take the funicular for a few euros to save your legs. Nicknamed “the upside down elephant” because of its outside shape, inside its interior is quite pretty with lots of ornate features.
  • Roman Amphitheatre – Right next to Notre Dame is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres outside of Rome. The theatre holds up to 10,000 people and is used by the city to host many festivals and events throughout the year. When there’s nothing going on, visitors are free to wander around the theatre and picture themselves enjoying a concert in roman times.

Lyon from Fourviere - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Museum of Fine Arts – This museum has one of the broadest collections of fine art pieces of any museum in the world with their collection ranging from ancient Egyptian antiquities to modern art pieces from the last few decades. The Museum of Fine Arts also holds pieces that are among the finest in all of Europe. For art lovers, this place is heaven and not to be missed.
  • Hire a bike – Lyon is laid out on relatively flat ground and running right through the city are two rivers. This makes Lyon a great place to hire a bike and explore. There are Velib bike stations all over the city where you can pick up a bike any time of day for a few hours or a full day and explore along the rivers or around the city. It’s a great way to cover a lot of ground in less time.

Lavender fields in Provence - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Drive: Lyon to Aix-en-Provence – approx. 3.5 hours. Leave Lyon early to allow time for plenty of stops along the way.

Suggested Stops: Allow plenty of time to stop at two French gems. First make stop at the Pont du Gard for a stroll out to this ancient roman aqueduct. Then head into Avignon to check out the Palais des Papes, walk over the Pont Saint-Benezet, wander the cobblestone streets browsing the boutiques and relax in one of the many sidewalk cafes.

Pont du Gard - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Food to the people of Provence is everything, so foodies will love exploring this region. From the markets to the cafes and rolling fields of produce, Provence is a region for the senses. Its naturally beautiful landscapes and pretty little towns have been attracting artists for hundreds of years who come for the light and create masterpieces that can now be found in some of the best galleries all over the world.

What to See & Do in Provence

  • Aix-en-Provence – Basing yourself in Aix-en-Provence will give you plenty of time to explore this picture perfect town. Dine in one of the many fantastic restaurants that use only the best local produce. Wander the cobblestone lanes to see exactly why artists like Cezanne were so inspired by this town. And browse through the chic boutiques scattered through the town.
  • Arles Amphitheater – During the summer months this ancient roman amphitheater comes alive with plays and concerts. For the rest of the year it is open to visitors. Take a walk around and picture yourself back in the roman days watching sporting events, wild-animal hunts, executions of prisoners, and gladiatorial contests.

  • Marseille’s Vieux Port – The Old Port of Marseille is the beating heart of the city and the Provence region. It is the place where locals and visitors go to relax, eat, drink, shop and just generally enjoy life. Wander through the shops and markets, have a drink or a bite to eat in one of the restaurants, bars and cafes or just stroll along the harbour people watching.
  • Saint-Remy-de-Provence – This quaint, traditional Provençal village is rather sleepy these days but back in Roman times it was a thriving Roman settlement, the ruins of which can still be seen today. However, this isn’t the town’s only claim to fame. It was also where Van Gogh was housed while being treated for his many psychiatric problems. It’s a lovely town to explore on foot and enjoy a break at one of the many cafes.

  • Moustiers Sainte-Marie – Hiding up the Gorges du Verdon is the town of Moustiers Sainte-Marie. The drive to this beautiful medieval town is on a long and winding road up the gorge with some spectacular scenery. The village itself is charming and well worth the effort to get there as it seems like time has stood still of hundreds of years.
  • Digne les Bains Lavender Fields – Take a drive through the rolling hills of Digne les Bains to see field after field of lavender mass planted. Stop by one of the road-side stalls or country shops to buy all sorts of lavender products from soaps and fragrance sprays to honey and other food products. The lavender blooms from June to August and the locals celebrate with a festival over a few days in August at harvest time. (Jump on a tour to see the very best lavender fields in the region.)

Day 9 to 10 – French Riviera

Nice Beach - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

Drive: Aix-en-Provence to Nice – approx. 5 hours if you take the slower coast road the whole way or 3 hours if you take the inland faster route. Leave Nimes early to make the most of the day and allow time for plenty of scenic stops along the way.

Optional Detour: To get to Nice you can take the quick route shown in the map above. Or if you have a bit more time you can detour the French Riviera coast stopping in Saint Topez, Cannes and Antibes.

The heart of the French Riviera, Nice is everything you have heard it is and so much more. Nice is a mixture of grit and opulence drenched with lots of sunshine. While the beaches and corso are the places to be and be seen, it’s the winding cobblestone lanes of the old town you’ll want to get lost in and find your own little piece of Nice.

What to See & Do in the French Riviera

  • Soak up with sun on the beach – While the beaches of Nice aren’t like the white sandy beaches most will be used to, the warm Mediterranean seas are more than enough to get most people over having to walk on pebbles. Whether you hire a sun lounger and umbrella for a day or brave it on the pebbles, a day by the water in Nice is an absolutely must!
  • Stroll the Promenade des Anglais – This palm fringed promenade runs for five miles along the beach at Nice and is the place to be and be seen when the sun is shining. You could easily spend a few hours strolling up and down the promenade watching the people enjoy life and this beautiful part of the world.

Laneways of the Old Town - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Nice Old Town – Once you’ve had your time in the sun, head to the old town to wander around the colourful winding cobblestone lanes. It’s a labyrinth you could easily get lost in passing but tiny local cafes, green grocers and artisan stores. There’s usually a market going on too which gives you a great glimpse into the lives of the locals.
  • Monaco – The nicest time of day to enjoy Monaco is just before the sun sets. You can take a bus or train from Nice (20-30 minutes) in the late afternoon to explore Le Palais des Princes de Monaco then watch the sun set over the billions of dollar’s worth of yachts in the marina. Finishing off the night in the Monte Carlo Casino or just outside in one of the sidewalk cafes checking out some of the world’s most expensive cars and the wealthy people who own them.

Monaco - The Best of France: A Two Week Itinerary - The Trusted Traveller

  • Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art – Get your final art fix of the trip at this museum famous for its Pop Art collection. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has a large collection of permanent exhibitions which are free to visit as well as ever-changing temporary exhibitions for a small fee. Car Hire

If you follow this trip to a tee you’ll be driving close to 2,000 km so you’ll want a vehicle that is comfortable for both driver and passengers, plus on that has plenty of space for your luggage.

For all my car hire bookings I use and recommend Expedia. I’ve found they offer the most comparable prices, let you search and compare multiple car hire companies and they have a great customer service team who can help if you come into any unexpected troubles.

Got More Time?

If you have more than 10 days to spend in France you have a few options to extend you’re time there.

  • Check out my Two Week France Itinerary which covers a little more time in some of the places mentioned above, plus a few nights in the historic Normandy region.
  • You can choose to add some additional days at the places mentioned above. This will give you more quality time to spend in each place and will allow you to see more and spend a bit more time relaxing.
  • Alternatively you can add another destination or two to your journey. Just a few of these options include the Bordeaux wine region, the French Alps, Dijon for the cuisine or Strasbourg on the German border to see how the cultures mix together to form a truly unique city.

10 Day Italy Itinerary: See the Best by Train

March 5, 2019 by Jen Lyons 1 Comment

You have just 10 days to explore Italy and want to make the most of your time.  The perfect Italy trip will have you seeing as much as possible but not heading home feeling like you need another holiday to get over the holiday.

This is where touring Italy by train is the perfect choice for you.

If you’re from the US, Australia or maybe other parts of the world, you will know that our countries long distance rail systems are not what you would call efficient, time or money saving. Visit Europe or Asia and you will wonder why we just can’t seem to get it right because really it seems so simple over there.

Europe is perfect for train travel and Italy is no exception. Services are fast, efficient, reasonably priced and generally run on time.

Being able to hop on the train in the centre of one place and arrive in the centre of another in a matter of hours is much more convenient and less stressful that negotiating busy airports. The seats and carriages are clean and comfortable plus you get to spend some time relaxing and gazing out the window watching the stunning scenery pass by.

Italy’s train network runs to every major city and most smaller cities and towns making it easy to get from place to place. There is a lot to see in Italy but with only 10 days you will need to be selective in the places you visit.

So, I’ve put together what I think is the perfect 10 day Italy itinerary by train.

This Italy train itinerary takes in three of the country’s major cities, and offers plenty of time for day trips to nearby regions. It gives you just enough time to see the major sights in each place without making you rush around from place to place.

Day 1 to 4 – Rome

Day 1 arrival in Rome. This itinerary assumes that you arrive in the morning giving you three quarters of a day to start seeing the sights.

Rome is the capital of Italy and once capital of the Roman Empire. This sprawling city is famous for its Roman ruins, incredible architecture, collection of world class artworks and home to the worlds smallest country, Vatican City.

What to See & Do in Rome

  • Vatican City – The home of the pope and catholic church. Inside you will find incredible architecture and world class art including Michelangelo’s famous painted ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Take a small group guided tourof the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica to save you time queuing for hours.
  • The Colosseum – The largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire and the world. While not still in tact today, it still gives a fascinating glimpse into its past. Book a guided tour (which includes the Forum below too!) to skip the queues and learn from an expert.
  • Roman Forum – As the heart of ancient Rome, the Forum was, and still is, one of the most celebrated meeting places in the history of the world. Your ticket to the Colosseum also includes entry to the Forum where you can wander around the ruins and take a walk up Palatine Hill for views over the Forum and the city.
  • The Pantheon – One of the best preserved Roman buildings remaining in the world. What is most incredible about the Pantheon is that most of its original features remain including the marble floors.
  • Spanish Steps – The worlds most famous staircase is constantly abuzz with people day and night.
  • Trevi Fountain – Do as the legend says and throw a coin in the fountain to ensure you one day return to Rome.
  • Piazza Navona – The city’s most beautiful square, featuring three spectacular fountains and surrounded by some of the city’s best baroque architecture.
Orientate yourself with a tour!

Book a Hop-on-Hop-off bus tour to maximise your time.

  • Piazza della Signoria – The heart of Florence’s old town. Visit to see the free open-air sculpture gallery including a copy of Michelangelo’s David and to check out the impressive medieval Palazzo Vecchio.
  • Pont Vecchio – Florence’s first bridge built over the Arno river in 1345 and the only one that survived WWII bombing of the city. It is lined with shops selling gold and silver jewellery. Make sure you view it from one of the adjacent bridges as well as walk over it.
  • Galleria delgi Uffizi – Home to the world’s most important collection of Renaissance art including painting, sculptures and tapestries from medieval times up to the modern day. (Don’t miss out, with a timed entry ticket!)

Things to Do in Florence

Day 8 to 10 – Venice

Train: Florence to Venice – approx. 2 hours with over 15 direct services at day. Take an early morning train from Florence to optimise your time in Venice.

Italy’s sinking city, Venice, is made up of 118 islands connect by bridges and separated by canals, and is literally sinking into the marshy ground it was built on. It’s a city renowned for it’s beauty, architecture and artworks and is best experienced without a map, getting lost in the maze of cobblestone streets.

What to See & Do in Venice

  • Piazza San Marco – The city’s largest square and main meeting place. It is surrounded by cafes, shops, museums and some of the city’s best architecture. Beware of the very tame pigeons!
  • Basilica San Marco – Located in Piazza San Marco, this basilica is one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in the city. Inside you will find incredible mosaics and paintings by some of the areas best artists.
  • The Grand Canal – This is the main and largest canal that snakes it way through the centre of the main island. It’s always busy with boats and barges running up and down carrying goods and people from dock to dock. A great way to do a quick sightseeing tour is by jumping on a vaporetto (Venice’s public transport) at one end and hopping off at the other.
  • Doge’s Palace – Once the residence of Venetian leaders, now a museum where you can get a glimpse at some of the rooms used in it’s day including stately reception rooms, offices, living quarters, prison cells and torture chambers. (Skip the long queue’s, buy a priority entry ticket!)
  • Rialto Bridge – This ornamental stone bridge spans the Grand Canal and is the most popular of Venice’s bridges. It’s a very lively spot where you will find shops and markets lining the bridge.
  • Take a Gondola Ride – While prices for a private gondola ride are close to €100.00 these days, to me, it is still worth the cost for this quintessential Venetian experience. If your lucky to get a chatty gondolier, he will entertain you with stories and maybe even serenade you as you punt along the canals. Most gondola’s seat 6-8 people, so sharing with others is a great way to save money (and so is booking in advance!).
  • Explore the Islands – Just a short boat ride away from the main island of Venice are a number of popular islands you can explore. Murano is know for it glass makers, Burano it’s canals lined with coloured houses and lace making and Lido is lined with beaches, restaurants and shopping. You can reach all of these islands from the ferry terminal near Piazza San Marco or you could join this three-hour guided tour to see it all with a local!

First Timers One Month Europe Itinerary

Train Tickets

While travelling by train is never going to be as cheap as taking a bus, or in some cases flying with a budget airline, it is going to be more comfortable, scenic and time saving.

There is a lot of debate about whether purchasing a rail pass is the most cost effective option when travelling by train in Europe. Really, it all comes down to the amount of travel days you plan on taking during your trip.

For this exact itinerary above (not including day trips), you will have two travel days, Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice, or three travel days if you choose to return to Rome at the end of the trip to fly out. Here are the average prices based on one adult travelling alone for both point to point tickets and rail pass.

Point to Point

Two Travel Days – Adult point to point tickets including seat reservation fee where applicable – €63.00*.

Three Travel Days – Adult point to point tickets including seat reservation fee where applicable – €113.00*.

Rail Pass

Adult Italy Rail Pass for  up to three days of travel in a one month period – €130.00* plus seat reservation fees where applicable.

The cheapest option by far for this itinerary is to purchase point to point tickets.

Visit the Rail Europe website in your country using the links below to purchase tickets.

  • Rail Europe USA
  • Rail Europe Canada
  • Rail Europe Australia
  • Rail Europe – Rest of the World

Alternatively, tickets are available at all Trenitalia train stations across Italy on the day or in advance but prices will likely be higher and there may not be availability for specific trains, especially high speed services.

For a comprehensive guide to Europe train travel I recommend The Man in Seat 61. Or for an accurate one stop shop of Europe train timetables check out the German Bahn website.

* Prices correct as at time of publishing.

A few things to note:

  • Flying into one city and out of another will save you time rather than having to double back to your original destination to fly home. The way airlines work in terms of pricing these day you should not be penalised for doing this.
  • Pack light. A backpack or light weight soft case is a good option as it makes getting on an off trains much easier.
  • Discounts are available on train tickets when traveling in groups of 2 or more, as a family unit, or for people aged under 26. Prices for point to point tickets above are averaged and may be cheaper or more expensive depending on how far in advance you book and whether there is a sale on at the time.

4 Day Itinerary for Las Vegas, NV (Written By a Local!)

March 3, 2019 by Guest Post 1 Comment

This is a guest post by Monique from My Perfect Itinerary travel blog.

Las Vegas is known for its epic party scene, never-closing atmosphere and extreme heat!

Being born and raised in Sin City, I formed a detailed guide to give you a well-rounded experience. This will include insider tips, best tourist attractions (that are more than just a pretty picture), and off-the-beaten path finds.

Whether it’s your first time to Las Vegas or 100th time, this guide is for you!

Psssst.. Want my guide on 40 FREE things to do in Las Vegas? Check it out here!

When to go to Las Vegas?

The best months to come to Las Vegas (weather wise) are early March or early October. The temperatures range are in the mid 70’s (Fahrenheit), and the crowds are minimal.

However, if you plan to attend some of the popular day clubs, these do not open up until mid-late March.

If you plan to spend a lot of time at the pool or Lake Mead, I would go in the middle of summer when the heat is the strongest.

Day 1: Spa Day

What better way to get rid of jet lag then to spend a relaxing day at one of Las Vegas’s many 5 star spas?

If you have been to a hotel spa in other cities, you will be overwhelmed with the amenities Las Vegas spas offer. Some examples include access to their fitness center, hotel pool, spa pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, snow room (yes, you heard that right), or salt cave.

If going in a snow room intrigued you (you’re lying if it didn’t), head over to Caesar’s Palace for a spa day at their world-renowned, greek themed spa.

If you want to really splurge (hey, money doesn’t count on vacation… or was that calories? Let’s just go with both), head to Golden Nugget to get a 24k Gold Facial. Talk about luxury!

After your recharging massage/facial, head back to your room to get ready for your first night in Las Vegas!

Start your trip off with a bang and head to one of the several night clubs. You have the option to purchase a table ($$$$) or go in on guest list.

TIP: Girls will get in free at most night clubs, assuming it is not a holiday weekend and it is not a guest DJ. There will be club hosts walking around on the strip trying to get you on their table all throughout the day. They have to hit a minimum every night and are more than willing to offer you a free entry to the club!

Some of the best nightclubs in Las Vegas include:

  • Hakkasan
  • Omnia
  • XS Las Vegas
  • Intrigue
  • And many more!

TIP: Drinks inside the club are a minimum of $25 per drink. I recommend going to a nearby liquor store and pick up a bottle before the club to have a drink or two in your room. This will save you tons of money and is what everyone does! I have NEVER ONCE, in my entire life been to the club without having a few drinks first.

4 Day Itinerary For Las Vegas, NV (Written By a Local!) - The Trusted Traveller

Day 2:

Head over to get your hangover breakfast and “hair of the dog” at Border Grill at Mandalay Bay Hotel. This famous brunch is open Saturday and Sundays and for only $55.00, you get bottomless food and mimosas.

After you have rightfully, over-stuffed yourself with food… head over to your hotel pool to enjoy your food coma by bathing in the sun with a frozen cocktail.

For dinner, I have a few options for you:

Do you like sushi? Las Vegas is known for having endless options for all you can eat sushi! For only $25-$30, you can get bottomless sushi at almost every local sushi restaurant. Some of my favorite options include:

  • Jianga
  • Sushi Mon
  • Sushi Factory
  • Daisho
  • Kaizen
  • Blue Fin
  • Yama
  • Sakana
  • Sushi Kaya

If you are not a big raw fish fan, head over to a charming French Restaurant that sits right on the Bellagio Fountains. Receive a 5 star dinner and a show at Mon Ami Gabi. This fine dining restaurant is located in the Paris hotel and will most likely need a reservation.

TIP: If you go to Mon Ami Gabi, head over to Hydeat the Bellagio for a pre-dinner drink. They have tables that line up right to the glass where you can see the beautiful Bellagio fountain show. This show goes off every 30 minutes before 8pm and every 15 minutes after 8pm. This fountain show never gets old, even after seeing it hundreds of times.

4 Day Itinerary For Las Vegas, NV (Written By a Local!) - The Trusted Traveller

After your dinner, head back to your hotel to get ready for your night out in Downtown Las Vegas.

Downtown is what most people picture when they have seen movies and TV shows. It is traditional, trendy, and “old” Las Vegas. You will find a lot of tourists here, but also a lot of locals. If I ever go out for a girls night, it is 99% of the time to Downtown.

The main street, Fremont, is a crowded area with no cars that is covered by a lit up dome. Along this street you will find endless bars, free concerts, street performers, or if you look up at the dome… you will see the world’s largest video screen playing you a free lightshow! Pick up a fat Tuesday (a frozen cocktail in a yard glass) and spend some time people watching.

People watching is extremely entertaining in every city, but Las Vegas takes the cake. Watching drunk girls, balancing in their heels after a long night of drinking is a free show!

If you want to take a short break from drinking, you can see Fremont Street from above by ziplining under the dome. Tickets range from $20-$50, depending on the height and time you choose to go.

Next, head over to the container park to stroll through the art galleries, shops, and live music. This entire area is made out of recycled shipping containers and is so unique to Las Vegas. Definitely worth checking out, especially since you are right there, it’s FREE, and would only take less than 30 minutes to walk around!

Lastly, spend the night bar hopping along Fremont. This is the best place to go bar hopping in Las Vegas because all of the bars are so close together and are free for girls to get in. Some of my favorite downtown bars are:

  • Commonwealth
  • Odd Fellows
  • Corduroy
  • Gold Spike

Day 3: Day Club

You know what’s better than a Las Vegas nightclub? A Las Vegas Day Club!

Las Vegas’s epic party scene keeps going at all hours of the day. Most day clubs open at 11am and run all the way until 7pm. Some of the best day clubs are:

  • Encore Beach Club
  • Wet Republic
  • Drai’s Beach Club
  • Daylight Beach Club
  • Marquee Day Club

Before your much-needed nap, head over to In-N-Out for a burger and fries. A trip to the west coast is not complete without a trip to In N Out burger! You can choose from one of their many locations all over the Las Vegas valley.

TIP: Get the “off-the-menu” animal style fries! It has their secret sauce, grilled onions and cheese melted on top. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Day 4: Explore the outskirts of Las Vegas

as Vegas has so many great hiking trails just 30-45 minutes outside of the city. If the weather permits, you can head over to Red Rock Canyon for beautiful rock formations and endless hiking trails.

If you are craving some greenery, drive out to Mt. Charleston for their Mary Jane Falls hike. This is an moderate hike that will give you a beautiful lookout over the forest.

If you have a rental car, you can do a day trip to The Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Antelope Canyon.

After the sun has set, it’s time to see Las Vegas from above! There are so many great options for Helicopter Tours that fly you over the Las Vegas Strip. Flights start at $100 per person and increase depending on length, time and date.

For dinner, head over to Las Vegas’s new Catch restaurant and club. They are known for their instagram-worthy ambience, craft cocktails, and “hit me” dessert. Whether you are celebrating something special or not, the dessert is to die for!

4 Day Itinerary For Las Vegas, NV (Written By a Local!) - The Trusted Traveller

To end your Las Vegas trip with a BANG, book tickets for one of the many Cirque Du Soleil shows. I have seen so many of these, and they get more impressive everytime. These shows typically last 2 hours and boy, do they pack stuff in there! These performers will make your jaw drop on numerous occasions and leave you wanting to see another one of their 19 shows.

That’s a wrap! There so much to see in Las Vegas it’s hard to narrow it down to a long weekend. I feel this itinerary will give you a well-rounded experience of Las Vegas, showing you the touristy sites, luxury experiences, outdoor activities, and local spots. My wish to you is that you love your trip enough to come back a second time!

One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak

June 3, 2018 by Jen Lyons 4 Comments

When travelers think of the Thai islands, they commonly refer to the islands in the south of Thailand. Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

However, there are some equally as amazing islands located about 4 hours east of Bangkok near to the Cambodian border, which are just waiting to be explored.

In this itinerary we will take you for a quick trip from Bangkok to the islands in the province of Trat including; Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood.

Never head of them? Perfect, read on.

Days 1 to 3 – Koh Chang

Exploring Koh Chang - One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak - The Trusted Traveller

Koh Chang is sometimes referred to as Elephant Island. This is by far the largest of the three islands in this island hopping trip.

The best way to get to Koh Chang is by taking a minivan from Ekkamai bus terminal. A one-way trip takes about four hours and 300 THB per person. The van stops about 25km from the pier where you transfer to a pick-up up truck. Depart early in the morning and you will arrive to Koh Chang by about lunchtime.

Decide which beach to stay on Koh Chang. Lonely Beach has a lively party vibe with music playing late into the night, great for backpackers. Klong Prao and White Sands beach both have a good range of boutique hotels for the mid-range budget (from USD 50 per night). To escape the world, head over to Long Beach where you will find a small selection of secluded bungalows.

Long Beach, Koh Chang - One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak - The Trusted Traveller

The first day you can spend relaxing at the beach by you hotel. You have earned it from all the travel. The west coast of Koh Chang has some of the best sunsets I have seen in Thailand. Kick back with a cold drink, a nice Thai meal and soak it all in.

The next morning head out for a snorkeling trip from Bang Bao pier. Boats depart early in the morning, around 8am, for a half day trip. Bookings can generally be made through your guesthouse, or at a travel agent in town.

In the afternoon, stop by the Kai Bae Viewpoint for sunset. You will get a fantastic view of the smaller islands off the west coast of Koh Chang.

For an adventure on your third day on Koh Chang, take a kayak out from your guesthouse to one of the small islands off the west coast. Koh Suwan is small island 1.6km off the coat where you can enjoy a secluded beach to yourself, surrounded by jungle.

Days 4 to 5 – Koh Mak

Koh Mak Sunset - One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak - The Trusted Traveller

In the morning, go back to the mainland in Trat then make your way over to the Laem Ngop Pier. It is located about 10 minutes from the ferry pier for Koh Chang. Here you take a speedboat across to Koh Mak.

Koh Mak is much smaller and less developed than Koh Chang. The main beaches to stay on and Ao Kao (south west coast) and Ao Suan Yai (north west coast), most bungalows are located on these two beaches. Both are nice long sandy beaches with clear blue water.

Explore the island’s walking trails by foot or bicycle. The island is quite flat so walking trails are easy. You can explore the islands coasts, the islands original community, and the obscure artwork called the Kingdom of Somchai.

Koh Mak is also a good island for scuba diving as it is right on the marine national park. Head over to Koh Mak Divers on Ao Kao to inquire on which trips are going out for the day. Dives are amongst the cheapest you will find in the region from just 2,500 THB for two dives on the same day!

If you are not a qualified diver, you can also go out for either snorkeling or kayaking during the day. Most beachfront guesthouses offer equipment for day rental.

The next stop is Koh Kood. Boonsiri Ferry is the only daily scheduled service between Koh Mak (Ao Nid Pier) and Koh Kood (Ao Salad Pier). The 30min boat departs Koh Kood at 3pm in high season only. It is also possible to charter a speedboat between the two islands in the high season. During the low season you will have to transfer back to Trat before traveling to Koh Kood.

Days 6 to 7 – Koh Kood

Exploring Koh Kood - One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak - The Trusted Traveller

Koh Kood is smaller than Koh Chang, yet larger than Koh Mak. There is quite a lot to do on Koh Kood, therefore you could spend a few extra days here is time permits. Check out this article for a full list of things to do on Koh Kood.

There are two waterfalls on Koh Kood, but Khlong Chao is the nicest with a decent pool of freshwater for swimming. To get to the waterfalls you can either hire a motorbike or charter a songtaew from your guesthouse.

After the waterfall, you can visit one of the fishing villages around the islands. Ao Salat is a nice village built on stilts over the water. You can visit Ao Salat to get some fresh seafood for lunch.

During the high season Koh Kood Cabana has fire shows every second night. A group of five workers from the hotel put on a great 10 minute show which is definitely worth watching. A great way to end the night on Koh Kood.

Ao Ta Prao Beach, Kood - One Week Island Hopping in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak - The Trusted Traveller

Spend your second day on Koh Kood enjoying the tranquility of Ao Ta Prao Beach. On a busy day you might share the beach with ten other people, on a quiet day you will be the only on there.

Walking south down Ao Ta Prao, you will find some small sandy trails. Follow these trails around the island to discover other secluded beaches and bungalows by the water.

Ferries depart Koh Kood from Ao Salat Pier in the morning between 9am and 11am. There are also speedboats from Ao Salat to Trat as late as 1pm, however seats are limited and tickets are about double the price. Your final island hopping day is mainly spent traveling from the island back to the mainland, then 4-5 hours in a minivan back to Bangkok. You will arrive in Bangkok by mid-afternoon.
